Alastair Inglis writes;
On the 17th of April, Britains roads were flooded with classic cars for National Drive It Day, organised by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs to promote the freedom to use our older cars without restrictions. CPUK was invited by Hagerty International, the classic car and bike insurance specialist, to join them in celebrating the FBHVC Drive It Day and for raising over ã2,000 for the FBHVC and Horton General Hospital charities.
Hagerty hosted around 90 participants to a 70 mile trip from Silverstone to Banbury and then to Stowe House where they provided hot soup and rolls for the assembled enthusiasts.
Only two Peugeots arrived at Silverstone Racing Club for the start of what was to turn out to be an extremely well-organised and enjoyable run through the highways and byways of the four counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxford and Buckinghamshire. Peter and Ann Beale came in their immaculate, shiny black 504 cabriolet, and Alastair and Myra Inglis in their not-quite-so-immaculate 203, Sacre Bleu.
Our first stop was at ProDrive in Banbury. While treated to coffee and biscuits we were able to inspect their mouth-watering collection of cars on display that they have raced or supported over the years. These included Richard Burns Subaru (he started with a 205 GTI) and the Aston Martin DBR9 of David Brabham (2009 winning 908 HDi FAP Le Mans driver).
The CPUK team stopped for a leisurely picnic lunch beside the Oxford Canal near Aynho before continuing on to Stowe House, part of Stowe School, for a cup of delicious pea and mint soup and rolls. Of all the cars that were lined up in font of this magnificent facade, a wonderful trio of vintage Bugattis stole the show.
It was a very pleasant, interesting and relaxing day, doing what we enjoy most with our old Peugeots driving them leisurely with good company.
